- Donations: If you care to donate to any of our local projects,
contact one of the Magrath Lions Club members, or now you can donate
online.
- Volunteers: The good people of the Town of Magrath have always been
very supportive to us in the Magrath Lions Club. Many projects are started and
completed with help of local volunteers in and about the town.
- Lions Pancake Breakfast: On or about the 24th of July we host a
fundraiser, in conjunction with our annual Town of Magrath celebration. We
receive donations of the breakfast fixings: pancake flour, eggs, milk
(Hutterite Colonies), hash browns, sausages, eggs, etc. Volunteers get up
early to help cook up and serve the breakfast .. all you can eat for a few
bucks a plate.
- McIntyre Steer Raffle: The owners of the McIntyre Ranch (located
south of Magrath) have supported the Magrath Lions Club since it's inception
by donating a steer calf or equivalent in cash each year for a 24th of July
steer raffle. We sell tickets for $1 each and the winner gets the calf to sell
or $500 cash and we sell the calf. For the second year in a row, the winner of
the steer raffle graciously donated the prize back to the club .. Thanks to
Lion Elizabeth Olsen (Jul 2000) and to Robert Leishman (Jul 2001).
- Lions Bottle Race: For many years we ran an bottle race down the
irrigation canal. Why bottles? Because plastic floating ducks cost up to 2.50
each to rent and the plastic pop bottles were free.
- Lions Christmas Card: Rather than spending money on sending out
local Christmas Cards, we ask for donations to our Lions Christmas Card. Lion
John Bourne is instrumental in organizing and implementing these fund raisers.
The money goes to local projects and names of all those who have donated is
published in the local paper over the Christmas season.
- Misc. Sports Pools/Mints: Lion John Bourne runs Baseball and Hockey
Pools and sells Lions Mints for us at the local Home Hardware store in the
Magrath Trading Company.
- Concerts: Thanks to Lion Norman and Barbara Hillmer for organizing
the Kings'men Concerts.
- Donations/Carnivals: In the early days money was raised primarily
through direct donations and grand events like the annual Lions carnival.
Homemade games of chance and rides were a big hit back in the 40's and 50's.
Unfortunately, this kind of event is cost prohibitive today with insurance and
licensing considerations. One highlight of these events was the Carnival
Queen, selected by popular vote through sales of tickets, who was then crowned
and presented with gifts and then reigned at a grand ball in her honor.
