Training takes to the road...

One of the most unique and valuable components of the HPS Program offered by STARS is its accessibility to health care providers throughout Alberta, the Northwest Territories and Montana.

The mannequin has been installed in a motor home, creating a large mobile emergency room, which recreates the familiar "code room" for medical staff. STARS is able to bring training to health care providers who might otherwise be faced with the barriers of distance from teaching centers, as well as the inability to leave the community at regular intervals to train. Through the mobile HPS Program, STARS is able to provide training right in the learner's community, with medical staff receiving instruction as a team.

Realistic situations...

The HPS Program puts participants through several different scenarios during their sessions, with debriefing periods after each case to allow for the maximum possible interaction between colleagues and facilitators.

For its part, the mannequin offers a true-to-life experience - it speaks, blinks, has reactive pupils and his lungs simulate real gas exchange. It has realistic chest movements and sounds, and has an anatomically correct airway, allowing intubation and other more invasive airway management skills practice. It can have chest tubes, NG tubes and Foley catheters placed as required.

Drugs can be administered with the expected physiologic effects and toxicity. In addition, in the event of cardiac rhythm disturbances, cardioversion and defibrillation with real equipment can be performed.

The STARS Human Patient Simulator Program doesn't focus on evaluation, but instead on the promotion of excellence in patient care. Both those participating and those delivering the program learn from each other's unique experiences and problem solving approaches.

Committed to excellence...

Over time, the effectiveness of the mobile Human Patient Simulator Program compared to standard teaching methods will be evaluated. Universities are assisting in the development of curriculum and in pursuing various research study questions pertaining to medical learning.

The Alberta Shock Trauma Air Rescue Society (STARS) anticipates enthusiastic participation and success through the Human Patient Simulator Program and is deeply grateful for the generous support of major program sponsors Lockerbie & Hole Contracting Limited, Lions International Multiple District 37 and Medical Education Technology Incorporated.

STARS Air Ambulance STARS is a dynamic outreach program that links critically ill and injured patients in the community with specialty services. We are dedicated to providing immediate expert consultation, safe and timely mobile emergency care, universal access and ongoing professional development for community health care providers. STARS is committed to the growth of knowledge and skills through innovation and research.

STARS offers a unique opportunity for rural and urban health care providers to enhance their team skills in critical care crisis management through its Human Patient Simulator (HPS) Program.

The METI (Medical Education Technology Incorporated) Human Patient Simulator is a realistic model of human physiology and reaction. The HPS mannequin can simulate complex medical and surgical problems over and over again. Whether common or rare, a given medical scenario can be experienced and managed in a non-threatening environment with an emphasis on teamwork and troubleshooting. Reactions and skills are tested and practiced, leading to a high degree of familiarity and confidence.

Over the years, innumerable pilots have been trained through the simulation of realistic, routine and complex flight procedures and emergencies. The HPS was developed by shifting these valuable concepts of flight simulation into the medical realm.
