We held a planning meeting last Tues June 25, 2002 for our upcoming Pancake Breakfast fundraiser. Made assignments for food and preparations. Also approved payment to Rick Beres for welding repairs to the Lions Park playground equipment $130. Also approved purchase of red, white, and blue metal paint for playground. The proposed Tue/Thu schedule was voted on and defeated - we will stay with our normal schedule of 1st and 3rd on Tue night meetings only. Website and fact sheets will be amended to correspond with this decision. Discussion and voting on proposed constitutional amendments will be deferred to our next meeting in September. Note: The 'Paint Project' was started Fri June 28, 2002 and successfully completed Sat June 29, 2002. Cost $40 for paint supplies and 6 hours volunteer labor.

On Monday June 24, 2002 Lions Norm Hillmer, Ken Balderson, and Roger Davies presented a personalized Lions Project Pride certificate and Canadian flag to each of the students and teachers in the two Magrath Elementary School grade 1 classes (some 45 children). All were very appreciative of the new flags. One of the teachers, Mrs Sharon Hatch, added a personal story about when she was involved in a two week student exchange as a Grade 12 student representing the Magrath Lions Club visiting with and then hosting a student from a Lions Club in Montana.

For most of you who were able to attend our last 'meating' - the BBQ at the Fish Pond Campground - we distributed our June 2002 newsletter. A copy of the newletter is also available online our our club website in PDF ( http://magrath.freeservers.com/lionsclub/docs/newsletter.pdf ) and /or in HTML ( http://magrath.freeservers.com/lionsclub/newsletter.htm ) formats.

After the BBQ a short meeting was held. Some highlights:
* Lion John Bourne was presented his '10 Member Key' award for sponsoring over 10 members into the club over the years.
* Lion Ken Balderson reported on the status of 'our' leaking clubhouse roof. Many of the suspended ceiling panels (up to 90 panels to replace them all) have water damage. As the Magrath Trading Company actually owns the building, they will kindly be repairing the roof at a cost of about $5000. The lions club agreed to allocate up to $500 for replacement panels and to donate the labor to install them after the roof repairs are completed.
* Lion Norm Hillmer reported on the flags to be presented to the Magrath Grade 1 class. Lion Devar Dahl agreed to organize a time for this presentation to be made in their regular classroom.
* Lion Roger Davies reported on Leadership Training and presented planning documents for next fiscal year and some housekeeping items for discussion and a vote at the next meeting. Also passed on the request for host families for upcoming youth exchange in end of July and start of Aug.
* Our next club meeting will be held Jun 18, 2002.

We enjoyed a lovely steak barbeque with the Magrath Lions last night down at the fish pond. Lion Lawrence Papworth coordinated the luncheon plans. Lion John Bourne cooked the steaks for us to perfection on grills borrowed from Lion Lawrence and Lion Ken Balderson. After the meal, Lion President Norm Hillmer presented Lion John Bourne with a 10 member pin for sponsoring over 10 members into Lions over the years. Lion Roger Davies presented the June 2002 newsletter and some plans for next year. A lovely time was had by all!

Also, remember our next meeting on Jun 18, 2002 where we plan to organize for the upcoming July 27th Pancake Breakfast fundraiser and also to discuss and vote on important proposed amendments to the club charter for next fiscal year.

Rick Beres has repaired the Lion Park carousel for us at my request. I will bring the bill for park maintainance to next meeting. Now we need a paint party to brighten up the old playground equipment. To be discussed. Please note website updates to our Projects page to provide additional information on proposed Lion Park Upgrade and Lion Youth Exchange programs. Also installed a facility for online donations via PayPal (in $US only) .. which may be used to submit donations by credit card directly the club. Lion RDD

Our meeting for May 21, 2002 was cancelled today by Pres Norm Hillmer. Sorry about that! Apparently our meeting hall is leaking badly from the roof .. again! I was going to report on the status of the Lions Park. Took some pictures and requested catalogs and information for future use. Maintenance report: The wooden structure and tractor tires are present but not too useful. The metal spinning carousel was previously missing one railing. A second broke off last week. Asked Rick's Portable Welding to repair it. I will get bill for next meeting. Part of the brick work around the main sign has been broken off. Will ask Dave Lowry to see what can be done to fix that up. Later this year we should consider more paint .. especially on the carousel. The 10 new trees we planted are doing well .. only one has a noticable lean to the east. The newly repaired fence at the back looks great - thanks to Lion Lawerence and his helpers! Swings and Teeter-totters appear to be in good repair. Lion RDD
