Standard Operating Protocols Manual
Situation: Motor Vehicle Accident - The call for assistance by the
ambulance to a motor vehicle accident will be given by the usual siren and by
request from the ambulance via radio on the frequency used by the Fire
Department.
- Equipment to be used:
- P4 as pumper or P3 if P4 can't go.
- R1 as rescue van.
- Persons to be activated:
- One person at base for radio communications.
- Three personnel in P4
- Three personnel in R1
- Others to stay at base (as officer in charge designates) in case extra
help is needed.
- Action of Firefighters:
- P4 Driver
- Park truck on the same side as the incident.
- Turn on supply valve.
- Engage pump.
- Maintain pressure at 75 pounds unless otherwise directed.
- Remain by the pump unless directed otherwise by the incident
commander.
- P4 Window Passenger:
- Pull out 100 ft of 1 1/2" hose and ensure that it is long
enough to do the job. If not get more.
- Request water from pumper.
- Set nozzle to proper configuration for situation (fog or straight,
etc).
- Stay at your post in readiness for any fire, spill, or assistance
requiring the water.
- P4 Center Passenger:
- Prepare to do forward traffic control by obtaining the following
equipment.
- Portable radio
- Traffic vest
- Stop/Slow sign
- minimum of 3 traffic cones (daylight)
- minimum of 4 flares (evening)
- At a position approx. 30 meters (100') or further if the topography
indicates.
- Properly lay out cones or flares
- R1 Driver:
- Park on the same side as the incident but some to the rear to allow
room for other emergency vehicles to park at the scene as necessary
- Try to anticipate items that will be needed at the scene and make
them ready
- Stay in radio communication with the incident commander
- Be prepared to be the radio link between the incident and base
- R1 Back Passenger:
- Ready for traffic control with the following equipment.
- Traffic vest
- Portable radio
- Stop/Slow sign
- 3 Traffic Cones (daylight)
- 4 Flares (night)
- At 30 meters (100') set up cones (or flares) to the rear of the
incident. This distance may have to be further as determined by the
incident commander.
- R1 Front Passenger (Incident Commander):
- Ensure proper parking of vehicles.
- ensure readiness of pumper / hose / and placement of hose operator.
- Ensure safety at the scene
- at the incident
- traffic
- persons coming on the scene
- Make contact with the RCMP.
- Keep in contact with other emergency services at the scene.
- Traffic
- Keep traffic moving slowly if it does not create a hazard.
- If traffic will be a hazard, prepare to divert it (coordinate this
with the RCMP).
- If other firefighters are necessary radio back to base and be
prepared to send back R1 (as a last resort ..)
