Radio-Phone Interface (Zetron)

The Magrath Fire Department utilizes a Zetron Radio-Phone interface board to permit fire personnel with keypad equipped radio equipment to perform the following functions:

For use only by authorized Magrath Fire Department personnel.

Procedure:

Answering the Fire Line. navup.gif (115 bytes) When the fire alarm phone (758-3232) rings, the Zetron monitors the line and also "rings" (warble) over the fire radio channel.

  • To pick up the line (must be ringing) .. make sure radio lockout is off, turn off scan on radio (if required), switch to channel 1, then - key the microphone (PTT), press the * key for about 2 seconds, and then release the microphone. The Zetron will confirm with a beep. You are now connected radio to phone line. While you are talking the other party cannot be heard by you and vice versa. Collect all information.
  • To disconnect the line .. PTT and press the # key for about 2 seconds. Note: Must disconnect line in order to initiate the fire alarm (if required).

Starting  the Fire Alarm.navup.gif (115 bytes) The Zetron is programmed to control two relays. Relay A controls the fire hall phone line and Relay B controls the fire alarm itself. These relays are controlled as follows:

  • First, send attention code to Zetron: While keying  the microphone (PTT) enter code *,*,1. Release the microphone and the Zetron should respond with a double-beep.
  • Then send one of the following code combinations:
    • PTT 1,1 .. Turn Relay A and B ON - pickup phone and start alarm
    • PTT 0,1 .. Turn Relay A unaffected, Relay B ON - start alarm
    • PTT 0,0 .. Turn Relay A and B OFF - reset Zetron

If code is accepted, the Zetron should respond with series of five beeps. In addition, when the fire alarm is started another external relay will play high-low tones over the radio on the fire channel while the alarm sounds at the fire hall.

IMPORTANT: Remember to reset the Zetron (i.e. using PTT *,*,1,0,0 ) or the relays will remain open and potentially cause subsequent false alarms.

Answering the Fire Hall Line. navup.gif (115 bytes) When the fire hall phone rings (758-6507) for more than 4 times, the Zetron monitors the line and also "rings" (bing/bong) over the fire radio channel.

  • To pick up the line (must be ringing) .. key the microphone (PTT), press the * key for about 2 seconds, and then release the microphone. The Zetron will confirm with a beep. You are now connected radio to phone line. While you are talking the other party cannot be heard by you and vice versa.
  • To disconnect the line .. PTT and press the # key for about 2 seconds. Note: Must disconnect line in order to initiate the fire alarm (if required).

Remote access to Fire Hall Line.navup.gif (115 bytes) The Zetron Relay A controls the fire hall phone line (758-6507). Using a keypad equipped radio, the line can be put off hook, dialed, and used as a radio-phone. The line must not already be in use. The fire alarm line (758-3232) has priority .. if this line rings while the other is in use, the Zetron will drop the fire hall phone connection and ring with the fire alarm line.

  • First, send attention code to Zetron: While keying  the microphone (PTT) enter code *,*,1. Release the microphone and the Zetron should respond with a double-beep.
  • Then send one of the following code combinations:
    • PTT 1,0 .. Turn Relay A ON, Relay B unaffected - pickup phone .. wait for dialtone then silence and dial number on keypad. Switches to radio-phone mode.
